Waterslides, Winter Air, and a Week That Actually Feels Like a Break

March in Thunder Bay has its own personality. The sun feels stronger, the snow softens at the edges, and the air carries that quiet promise of spring. But evenings still remind you it’s winter. Sidewalks can be slushy by noon and frosty again after dinner.

That’s exactly why a March Break staycation works so well here.

You do not need to chase perfect weather. You just need the right home base.

For families planning March 15–21, the sweet spot is simple: one meaningful outing a day, then return somewhere warm, lively, and easy. A place where kids can burn off energy without another drive across town. A place where parents can exhale.

At Superior Inn Hotel & Conference Centre in Thunder Bay, that rhythm becomes effortless. The week centers around extra waterslide time, with extended slide hours from noon into the evening during March Break. It gives your day structure without pressure. You explore in the morning. You slide in the afternoon. You eat, laugh, and settle in by night.

And suddenly, you are not just “off school.” You are on a real break.

The Staycation Formula That Actually Works

Most families fall into one of two traps during March Break.

They either overschedule every hour, racing between attractions until everyone is tired and cranky. Or they stay in pajamas too long, scroll too much, and wonder where the week went.

The better approach is quieter.

Pick one anchor each day. Just one.

Maybe it is a visit to the Thunder Bay Museum, where curious kids and grandparents can wander at their own pace. Maybe it is a waterfront stop at Marina Park, where the open sky feels bigger and brighter than your living room ceiling. Maybe it is a half-day drive to Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park, where the sound of water crashing through late-winter air feels like the reset button you did not know you needed.

You go out. You explore. You take pictures.

Then you return.

And that is when the magic happens.

Afternoons That End in Laughter

Back at the hotel, the mood shifts from coats and boots to swimsuits and towels.

The pool area becomes your daily celebration. The kind of place where siblings race to the bottom of the waterslide. Where parents pretend they are “just supervising” and end up laughing harder than the kids. Where grandparents claim the warm poolside chairs and keep watch with snacks and towels ready.

The extended waterslide hours during March Break mean you do not have to rush. Noon through evening gives families flexibility. You can go early, break for dinner, and return. Or you can make the slide your grand finale each night.

It is this rhythm that makes the week feel expansive instead of exhausting.

Small Comforts That Make a Big Difference

A staycation only feels like a vacation when the logistics are easy.

Rooms come equipped with microwaves and mini fridges, which means room picnics are not just possible, they are fun. Complimentary Wi-Fi keeps everyone connected when needed, but somehow it feels less tempting when a waterslide is waiting downstairs.

If you want to lean into the “reset” feeling of the week, the renovated spa suites with fireplaces offer a quiet contrast to the splash and laughter. After the kids wind down, the evening can shift into something softer and slower.

And when nobody feels like bundling up again for dinner, The Lake & Spruce Restaurant is right on site. A kids’ menu makes things simple. In-room dining keeps pajama nights possible. Thursday wing night can turn into a casual midweek celebration.

Everything stays contained. Everything stays easy.

The Beauty of Thunder Bay in Mid-March

March in Thunder Bay is not dramatic. It is subtle.

Average daytime temperatures hover just above freezing, and evenings dip well below. That means outdoor time feels best in late morning or early afternoon, when the light is gentle and the air is manageable.

It also means the pool becomes your reward.

Spend an hour outside at Marina Park. Warm up on the slide.
Drive to Kakabeka Falls. Return for an evening swim.
Browse downtown at Goods & Co. Market. End with splash time.

The contrast between winter air and warm water makes everything feel more vivid.

A Week You Will Actually Remember

Here is how a week can unfold without feeling forced:

Arrive Sunday. Settle in. Let the kids test the waterslide before dinner.

Monday, take in the view at the Terry Fox Monument, then make the pool your afternoon celebration.

Tuesday, slow the morning. Sleep in. Visit the library or explore downtown. Slide again at night.

Wednesday, choose the museum for a weather-proof adventure. Return to the hotel before anyone feels tired.

Thursday, drive out to Kakabeka Falls. Come back early enough to enjoy the later evening slide hours.

Friday, wander Goods & Co., let the kids choose a treat, and make it your final big pool night.

Saturday morning, grab something warm from the Thunder Bay Country Market before heading home.

No frantic rush. No post-vacation exhaustion.

Just a week that felt different.

Why This Kind of Break Matters

A staycation is not about going far. It is about shifting rhythm.

It is about waking up somewhere that is not your house.
About trading routine for something lighter.
About giving your kids a story to tell when school starts again.

March Break does not need airplanes or packed itineraries. In Thunder Bay, it only needs a thoughtful plan and a warm pool waiting at the end of each day.

For reservations or March Break details, contact Superior Inn Hotel & Conference Centre at 555 West Arthur Street, Thunder Bay, or call 807-577-8481.

This year, let March Break feel like a real break.

As the calendar turns to February in Thunder Bay, winter’s embrace is at its peak. Outside, the snow lies thick and sparkling, and daylight lingers a bit longer each evening. Temperatures still hover well below freezing – daytime highs average around –4°C (25°F), with nights often dipping to a brisk –18°C (0°F). But while the world outside is frosty, inside The Superior Inn Hotel & Conference Centre you’ll find warmth, comfort, and a welcoming spirit that makes this coldest month feel wonderfully cozy. February may be the shortest month of the year, but it’s filled with special moments – from romantic Valentine’s getaways to the fun of the Family Day long weekend – and we’re here to help you enjoy every one of them in superior style.

Cozy & Romantic Winter Escapes for Couples

February is the season of love, and there’s no better place for a romantic winter escape than The Superior Inn. Imagine stepping out of the snow and into a warm, intimate suite prepared just for you and your sweetheart. Our rooms are designed to be havens of comfort: plush pillow-top beds with fresh linens, soft lighting, and thoughtful touches that set the mood for relaxation. For an extra dash of romance, consider one of our Spa Suites, each featuring a king-size bed, a cozy sitting area, and even a fireplace perfect for two. Picture yourselves cuddled up by your private fireplace, sipping hot chocolate (or maybe a glass of wine), as snowflakes drift past your window – it’s a scene straight from a winter love story. We’re happy to help arrange those special surprises too. Whether it’s rose petals on the bed, a bottle of champagne on ice, or a local artisan chocolate sampler waiting in the room, our team loves adding personal touches to make your Valentine’s stay unforgettable. February in Thunder Bay may be cold, but you’ll feel nothing but warmth and togetherness during your couples’ retreat at The Superior Inn.

Family Fun & Winter Memories

February isn’t just for couples – it’s also a fantastic time for family fun, especially with the Family Day holiday giving many a long weekend off work and school. (In Ontario, Family Day falls on the third Monday of February – February 16, 2026, to be exact, creating a perfect mid-winter break for families.) If you’re planning a family getaway to brighten the winter, The Superior Inn has you covered with amenities that kids and parents alike will love. Our indoor pool complex is a tropical paradise in the heart of winter – under the glass atrium roof it’s always summertime. The kids will race each other to our three-story waterslide in pure delight (and who could blame them?). Every splash and squeal of laughter echoes through the warm air, making you forget the snow outside for a while. Parents can join in the fun or lounge poolside with a good book, knowing that the whole family is entertained and happy. And when the little ones finally tire out, your spacious family-friendly room is just steps away – we even offer poolside guest rooms so you can go from water to warmth in no time.

We know that making memories as a family is about the experience. That’s why we also have unique themed kids’ suites available – imagine your children’s faces when they open the door to a room decked out like a pirate ship adventure or a princess fairy-tale. Staying in one of these theme rooms turns an ordinary night into a magical mini-vacation for the young (and the young at heart). And because pets are family too, yes, we’re proudly pet-friendly! You don’t have to leave your furry companion behind – bring them along for the fun. We’ll welcome your dog with special pet amenities like cozy pet beds and treats, so every member of the family feels right at home with us. This February, let us help you beat the winter blues with a family trip filled with giggles in the pool, movies and popcorn in a comfy room, and maybe a snowman-building competition outside (we can lend you a carrot nose!). Family Day was made for bonding, and The Superior Inn is ready to make your winter family getaway easy, warm, and full of joy.

Local Flavors & Warm Welcomes at Lake & Spruce

One of the best parts of a winter escape is enjoying hearty meals in a cozy setting, and our Lake & Spruce Restaurant is just the spot for that. Open to both hotel guests and local visitors, Lake & Spruce has become one of the most comfortable places to eat in Thunder Bay – a place where comfort food and warm hospitality go hand-in-hand. You’ll feel it the moment you step inside and shake off the chill: the aroma of something delicious wafts from the kitchen, the lighting is soft and inviting, and there’s a friendly buzz of conversation from couples, families, and colleagues unwinding after a long day. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner, we’ve got you covered. In the mornings, start your day with fluffy pancakes or a classic Canadian breakfast to fuel your winter adventures. By lunchtime, you might crave a bowl of our homemade soup, simmered with love, or a grilled sandwich with local Lake Superior fish – fresh and satisfying. And in the evenings, our chefs add a bit of February flair to the menu. Since it’s the month of love, don’t be surprised to find a special dessert for two (perhaps a gooey chocolate lava cake meant for sharing) or a festive three-course Valentine’s dinner on the menu around mid-month. We keep things seasonal and heartwarming – think slow-cooked stews, roasted root veggies, and spices that warm you from the inside out.

The atmosphere at Lake & Spruce is designed to make anyone feel at ease. Grab a booth or a table by the window – you’ll be snug and comfortable whether you’re dressed up for date night or padding in with the kids after a swim. Locals love the Thursday Wing Nights (yes, our crispy wings with signature sauces are the stuff of Thunder Bay legends) and sports fans often drop by the adjoining Lake & Spruce Lounge to catch the big game. In fact, February is an exciting month for sports – from hockey playoffs to the Winter Olympics happening over in Italy (Feb 6–22, 2026). Our lounge features huge 75-inch TV screens, so you can cheer on Team Canada in the Olympics or watch the NHL action while enjoying a local craft beer or a hot toddy. There’s something truly satisfying about being in a warm pub-style lounge, hands wrapped around a mug of hot chocolate or a specialty coffee topped with a splash of Bailey’s, while outside the February snow falls gently. Whether you’re a hotel guest or a Thunder Bay local, Lake & Spruce welcomes you with that come-as-you-are comfort. No need to bundle up and drive across town for a great meal or a fun evening – a fantastic dining experience awaits right here, where the food is tasty, the smiles are genuine, and the cold can’t reach you.

Explore Thunder Bay’s Winter Delights

Don’t let the cold keep you from experiencing the winter wonderland that is Thunder Bay in February. Our city is brimming with activities and sights that showcase the beauty and culture of the season – and The Superior Inn’s convenient location (just off Arthur Street West) puts you close to it all. We love helping our guests plan their days, whether you’re up for outdoor adventure or looking for indoor entertainment. Here are a few ideas to inspire you during your February stay:

  • Snowy Adventures: February often brings the best snow conditions of the year, so it’s prime time to hit the slopes or trails. Local ski hills like Loch Lomond Ski Area are usually blanketed in powder by now, perfect for downhill skiing and snowboarding. If you prefer cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, there are peaceful forested trails at Kamview Nordic Centre and breathtaking routes at Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. One particularly magical sight is the frozen Kakabeka Falls (nicknamed the “Niagara of the North”) – in winter it’s a glittering curtain of ice that’s truly a must-see. Just bundle up, embrace the crisp air, and enjoy the sparkle of the snow all around. We promise – coming back to the hotel for a hot shower or hot tub soak afterward will feel incredible!
  • Cozy Indoor Attractions: When you need a break from the cold, Thunder Bay’s indoor attractions offer warmth and enrichment. Spend an afternoon wandering through the Thunder Bay Art Gallery, the largest art gallery in Northwestern Ontario, which often features fascinating Indigenous art and local exhibits – a perfect cultural escape on a chilly day. Or dive into regional history at the Thunder Bay Museum, where three floors of interactive exhibits let you and the kids step back in time and learn something new. If a quiet, relaxing morning is more your style, find a cute local café (our front desk has plenty of recommendations) and savor a hot latte and a famous Thunder Bay Persian donut while watching the snowflakes drift outside. And for a truly tropical respite, you can even visit the Centennial Botanical Conservatory, where lush green plants and flowers bloom year-round – it’s like a mini getaway to a warmer climate, right in the middle of winter.
  • February Events & Festivities: This month brings its own special events to Thunder Bay. Valentine’s Day (Feb 14th) weekend is full of opportunities for romance and fun – you might catch a unique candlelit concert by the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra for a magical date night, or browse a Valentine’s Maker’s Market at the local conservatory to pick up handcrafted gifts and treats. Soon after, the Family Day holiday kicks off community events that everyone can enjoy. One highlight is SnowDay on the Waterfront (scheduled for Feb 16, 2026 at Marina Park) – a free winter carnival where families can go skating, try out snowshoeing, and enjoy hot cocoa under the open sky. And don’t forget, Thunder Bay loves its hockey – if there’s a local Thunder Bay Bulldogs game or a curling bonspiel happening during your stay, joining the local fans in the stands is a great way to feel the community spirit (just ask our staff what’s on – we’ll point you in the right direction!). No matter when you visit in February, there’s likely something fun on the calendar. We’re always happy to share the latest events and help you plan an outing, so you can experience the best of our winter city and maybe go home with a few new stories to tell.

Throughout all your adventures, The Superior Inn is your warm home base. Head out into the snow by day knowing that when you return, a cozy room (and maybe a soak in the whirlpool) will be waiting for you. We love hearing about our guests’ excursions – don’t be surprised if our front desk or restaurant staff ask how your day went and genuinely listen to your Thunder Bay tales. We’re here to make sure every part of your trip is comfortable, convenient, and memorable.

Business Travel with a Personal Touch

February isn’t only for leisure travelers – it’s also a time when business travel picks up again after the holiday lull. If work brings you to Thunder Bay this winter, The Superior Inn is ready to be your office-away-from-office and your second home. We understand that traveling for business in the middle of winter can be challenging (snowy runways, icy roads, and bulky coats – we’ve been there), so we go out of our way to make your stay productive, smooth, and stress-free. Our on-site conference and meeting facilities are fully operational year-round, so whether you’re hosting a small team meeting or a training seminar, we have a space that can accommodate it. We’ve designed our meeting rooms to be versatile and tech-ready – from a handful of people to a larger group, we’ll set up the perfect configuration with modern A/V equipment and high-speed Wi-Fi to ensure things run without a hitch. Need a specific layout, extra conference phone, or a projector at the last minute? Just let us know. Our dedicated events team and on-site tech support are on standby to assist so that your focus stays on the meeting, not the logistics. And if you’re here for an industry conference or city-wide event, you’ll appreciate returning to a hotel where you can kick off your snow boots and recharge in comfort after a long day of networking.

We also provide plenty of little conveniences that business travelers appreciate in winter. Flying in? Take advantage of our complimentary airport shuttle – we’ll pick you up from Thunder Bay International Airport, so you don’t have to worry about renting a car or scraping ice off a windshield in the freezing cold. If you do choose to drive, you’ll find ample free parking at the hotel, and yes, we have plug-ins for your engine block heater on those extra-frigid nights (a true Canadian necessity!). Inside, our lobby features a 24-hour business corner where you can print documents or catch up on emails any time. Of course, the reliable Wi-Fi extends to all guest rooms and common areas, so you can work from your room, the lobby, or even by the pool if you’re multitasking relaxation with emails. Keeping up your exercise routine on the road? Our fitness centre is open early and late, meaning you can squeeze in that morning jog on the treadmill or lift weights in the evening to unwind. And when the workday is finally done, treat yourself to a well-earned break: perhaps a soothing soak in the hot tub to melt away stress, or a casual dinner and drink at Lake & Spruce where you can catch the news or a game on TV and not think about spreadsheets for a while.

Most importantly, we pride ourselves on personalized service that makes our business guests feel at home. Our front desk is staffed 24/7, so whether you arrive on a midnight flight or need a taxi at 4 AM for an early meeting, someone is here to help. Need a wake-up call to ensure you’re up before that big presentation? We’ve got you. Want an extra blanket or a cup of herbal tea to make your room extra cozy while you review your notes? Coming right up. Not sure where to take a client for lunch in town? Our staff will happily recommend a great spot (though we’ll quietly remind you that our own on-site restaurant makes a convenient and tasty impression for a business lunch or dinner). In the depths of winter, it’s often the small gestures that mean the most – a warm smile at check-in, a pot of hot coffee ready in the lobby when you need it, or a staff member who remembers your name and asks how your meeting went. We truly aim to provide that home-away-from-home feeling, even when you’re here to work hard. At The Superior Inn, you can be hard at work but still feel cared for – and that balance is something we’re proud to offer our corporate guests.

Make February Memories with Us

There’s a special charm to Thunder Bay in February. The hustle of the holidays is behind us, and the city settles into a gentler pace even as winter shows its most beautiful face – sparkling ice, peaceful snowy streets, and clear starry nights. The Superior Inn Hotel & Conference Centre invites you to experience all of this in warmth and comfort. We strive to make every winter stay feel special – maybe it’s the way our team greets you with genuine warmth at the door, or the way a fresh pot of coffee is always ready to perk you up each morning. Perhaps it’s knowing that while February winds may howl and the snow may pile high, you’re snug and safe within our walls, treated like family.

If you’re planning a visit or even a local staycation this February, we’d be thrilled to host you. With the city’s summer rush still months away, you’ll often find a quieter, more intimate atmosphere at this time of year – ideal for a peaceful getaway or quality time with loved ones. Browse our website or give our friendly reservations team a call to find the perfect room or suite for your needs. Traveling with the kids or a larger group? Ask about our family suites or adjoining room options to keep everyone together. Dreaming up a surprise for someone special? Let us in on it – we love going the extra mile to arrange birthdays, anniversaries, or any “just because” surprises, from decorating a room to accommodating dietary needs for a special dinner.

So, pack your coziest sweaters and your sense of adventure – we’ll have the fireplace glowing, the pool warmed up, and the coffee hot for your arrival. Cozy Rooms for Chilly Nights

After a day out in the frosty air, nothing feels better than returning to a warm, comfortable room. The Superior Inn boasts 182 guest rooms thoughtfully designed for relaxation. Sink into plush pillow-top beds with fresh linens, and wake up to the aroma of in-room coffee brewing – a simple pleasure on a cold January morning. Each room is a toasty retreat from the winter chill. And if you’re looking to add a touch of luxury to your stay (perhaps a romantic surprise or a special treat), consider one of our newly renovated Spa Suites. These premium suites feature king-size beds, inviting sitting areas, and even cozy fireplaces for those especially brisk nights. Imagine curling up by your own fireplace with a good book or a loved one as the snow falls softly outside – pure winter bliss!

We know that comfort means different things to different travelers. For some, it’s the serenity of a well-appointed room; for others, it’s the joy of having their four-legged family member along for the trip. Yes, The Superior Inn is proudly pet-friendly. You don’t have to leave your furry companion behind when you visit. We even offer special pet amenities (like cozy bowls and treats) to keep your pet just as happy as you are during your stay. Our goal is to make every guest feel right at home – including the canine kind! And throughout the hotel, you’ll notice homey touches that reflect the season. Don’t be surprised by a hint of winter decor in the lobby or the scent of hot chocolate and spiced coffee in the air. Little details like these all add up to a warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes January feel extra cozy.

Indoor Winter Fun for Everyone

When January’s freezing temperatures or snowstorms keep you indoors, The Superior Inn turns downtime into fun time. Our indoor pool complex is a year-round hit – and it truly shines in the heart of winter. Under our bright atrium roof, you’ll find a tropical oasis where it’s summer no matter what the weather outside. Kids race toward our three-story waterslide with delight (and who could blame them?). Every twist and turn of the slide comes with squeals of laughter that echo through the pool area. Parents can watch the action from the deck or dive right in – after all, you’re never too old for a bit of waterpark excitement! If relaxation is more your style, ease into our whirlpool hot tub and let the warm, bubbling water soak away any chill in your bones. While winter winds howl outside, you can float, splash, and play in comfort – it’s the ultimate cure for cabin fever.

Families especially treasure these indoor amenities. It’s not always easy to keep everyone entertained during the deep winter months, but here the weather never disrupts your plans. You can spend hours swimming, sliding, and giggling together without ever leaving the hotel. And when it’s time to dry off, our convenient poolside rooms make the transition from splash time to quiet time a breeze – just steps from pool to door. Looking to make your stay even more memorable for the little ones? Check out our unique theme suites decked out in kid-friendly décor. From pirate adventures to princess retreats, these rooms turn a night at the hotel into a mini-vacation all on its own. This January, fun and relaxation go hand-in-hand at The Superior Inn’s indoor paradise.

For guests who like to stay active, don’t forget we also have a fully equipped fitness centre on site. If your New Year’s resolution is to keep up with your workout routine, we’ve got you covered. Our gym features modern equipment for cardio and strength training, and it’s open early in the morning through late evening to fit your schedule. So, you can get that energizing workout in before a day of meetings or after a day of exploring – no excuses, even on the road!

Hearty Meals at Lake & Spruce Restaurant

All that swimming and winter fun can work up quite an appetite. Luckily, you won’t need to bundle up and brave the cold in search of food – Lake & Spruce Restaurant, our on-site dining spot, has you covered with delicious options from morning to night. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Lake & Spruce offers a welcoming space where comfort food takes center stage. In January, our chefs infuse the menu with seasonal flair to warm you from the inside out. Picture yourself savoring a steaming bowl of homemade soup or enjoying a plate of locally sourced Lake Superior fish on a chilly evening. Craving something classic and hearty after a day in the cold? Our famous crispy chicken wings or a charbroiled steak might hit the spot – the kind of satisfying fare that makes you momentarily forget the snow outside. And if you have a sweet tooth, ask about our dessert special of the week (there’s nothing like a warm berry crumble or chocolate treat to cap off a winter day!).

The atmosphere at Lake & Spruce is as inviting as the food. The dining room and adjoining Lake & Spruce Lounge are designed in a style that’s both modern and cozy, making it one of the most comfortable places to eat in Thunder Bay. Grab a booth or pull up a chair by the window; you’ll feel at ease whether you’re in a business suit after a day of meetings or in casual clothes after a swim. Families love the laid-back vibe (kids can enjoy their mac ’n’ cheese while parents unwind with a local craft beer or a glass of wine). And because the restaurant is just steps from your room, there’s no need to warm up the car or scrape ice off the windshield to go out for dinner – a tasty meal is always within easy reach on our property.

After dinner, feel free to stop by the Lake & Spruce Lounge for a nightcap or a hot evening drink. As January nights get colder, there’s something so satisfying about wrapping your hands around a mug of hot chocolate or a specialty coffee topped with a splash of Bailey’s. Sports fan? You’re in luck – our lounge features huge 75-inch TV screens, perfect for catching the hockey game or playoffs in high definition while you stay warm indoors. Cheer on your team, chat with fellow guests, or simply relax and watch the snowflakes dance outside the window. From a hearty breakfast to an evening cocktail, dining at The Superior Inn keeps you well-fed and content throughout your stay.

Explore Thunder Bay’s Winter Wonderland

Just because it’s the coldest month of the year doesn’t mean you can’t explore Thunder Bay – you’ll just balance outdoor adventures with plenty of cozy indoor time. The Superior Inn’s convenient location (just off Arthur Street West) puts you close to many of the city’s attractions, and our team is always ready with suggestions to help you make the most of a winter visit. January offers a mix of serene natural beauty and fun local activities. Here are a few ideas to inspire you during your stay:

  • Hit the Slopes or Trails: If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, take advantage of the snowy season. Local ski hills like Loch Lomond Ski Area are open for downhill skiing and snowboarding once the snowpack is thick (usually by January). Prefer cross-country? Kamview Nordic Centre offers groomed cross-country ski trails through peaceful forests. Snowshoeing is another great way to experience the landscape – try a trail at Sleeping Giant Provincial Park or a walk to see the frozen Kakabeka Falls, known as the “Niagara of the North,” in its winter splendor. Just bundle up and enjoy the crisp air and sparkling snow!
  • Indoor Attractions: On days when the weather is too harsh, Thunder Bay has wonderful indoor attractions. Explore the Thunder Bay Art Gallery, the largest art gallery in Northern Ontario, which showcases contemporary Indigenous art and local works – a perfect cultural escape on a cold afternoon. Or delve into regional history at the Thunder Bay Museum, with three floors of exhibits ranging from the fur trade era to modern times. These venues are both engaging and family-friendly, offering a warm refuge from the cold while you learn something new. And let’s not forget simple pleasures: you can spend a cozy morning at a local coffee shop savoring a hot latte and a famous local Persian donut (a Thunder Bay specialty) while watching the snowfall.
  • City Sights & Events: If you catch a clear day, head to Marina Park on the waterfront. A brisk walk will reward you with stunning views of Lake Superior’s ice-capped horizon and the Sleeping Giant formation silhouetted against the sky. The city often maintains a public skating rink at the waterfront in winter – skating outside with a view of the lake is a must-try if weather permits. January is also hockey season in Canada; consider catching a Thunder Bay hockey game at Fort William Gardens to experience local sports spirit. And while the major festivals are months away, keep an eye out for community events – for example, the city’s Winter FunDays (free family activities on Sundays) usually run through January and February. Our front desk staff will be happy to let you know what’s happening around town during your stay.

Through all your adventures, The Superior Inn serves as your cozy base camp. Head out for snowshoeing or meetings by day, and know that a warm room (and maybe a hot tub soak) will be waiting when you return. We’re here to help you enjoy the best of Thunder Bay’s winter, whether you love the outdoors or prefer to stay snug inside. Just ask our team for recommendations – from the best spot to grab a steaming hot chocolate to directions to the nearest sledding hill, we’ve got you covered!

We haven’t missed a beat just because it’s winter; our meeting rooms and conference facilities are fully operational year-round for any seminars, workshops, or planning meetings you have in mind. Each venue is equipped with modern A/V technology and free high-speed Wi-Fi, so your presentations and video calls will run smoothly. Need any special setup or assistance? Our events team and on-site tech support are on standby to help, ensuring your focus stays on the task at hand.

Traveling in January can be challenging, but we try to make it as easy as possible for our business guests. If you’re flying into Thunder Bay, take advantage of our complimentary airport shuttle – no need to worry about renting a car or scraping ice off a windshield in the bitter cold. If you do drive, you’ll find ample free parking waiting for you, with plug-ins available for engine block heaters on those extremely frigid nights. Inside the hotel, you’ll find conveniences like a 24-hour business corner, and of course that reliable Wi-Fi extends to all guest rooms and common areas so you can work from anywhere. Need to squeeze in a workout to stay sharp? Our fitness center is there for you. And when the workday is done, you can unwind at Lake & Spruce Lounge or soak in the hot tub to melt away stress.

We also understand that business travelers appreciate the little things. Our front desk is staffed 24/7, so whether you need a late-night wake-up call, an extra blanket to make your room cozier, or tips on where to grab a quick bite before an early meeting, we’re here to assist. In this deep winter season, it’s often the small comforts and acts of hospitality that make the biggest difference. Expect to be greeted with genuine warmth at every turn – we truly aim to make you feel at home, even when you’re hard at work on the road.

One of the great advantages of the Superior Inn is the sheer flexibility of our spaces. No matter what type of Christmas or holiday event you have in mind, we likely have a venue that’s just right:

  • Corporate Holiday Parties: Show appreciation to your team with a festive company party. Our largest banquet hall can host a big corporate Christmas gala, complete with a dance floor, stage, and festive décor. We’ll work with you on themes and lighting – from a winter wonderland ambiance to a classy cocktail evening – to celebrate your employees’ hard work in style.
  • Small Business & Local Organization Events: Even if your guest list is smaller, you shouldn’t have to compromise on atmosphere. We have intimate venues perfect for smaller office parties, club banquets, or charity fundraisers. Imagine a cozy room decorated with twinkling lights and wreaths, where 20–50 guests can mingle over eggnog and a delicious buffet. Our staff gives small gatherings the same special attention as large events, ensuring your community group or business has a heartwarming celebration.
  • Family Gatherings & Private Celebrations: Planning a family Christmas reunion, a milestone birthday, or maybe an anniversary that falls during the holidays? Hosting it at the Superior Inn means you can enjoy the day without worrying about cooking or cleaning. Our team can set up a long banquet table for a festive family feast or a casual lounge space for a holiday cocktail party with friends. We handle the details (and the dishes!) so you can focus on making memories.
  • Winter Weddings and Galas: For those celebrating love during the holiday season, our hotel is also a stunning wedding venue in December. Picture saying “I do” amid tasteful holiday decorations and then dancing the night away in a beautifully adorned ballroom. Likewise, if you’re organizing a New Year’s Eve gala, our Conference Centre can be transformed with glamour and glitz to ring in the New Year with sophistication. Whatever the occasion, our versatile rooms truly shine during the holidays, providing the perfect backdrop for celebration.

On-Site Catering & Custom Menus

Food and drink are central to any holiday event, and our on-site catering team has you covered. The Superior Inn’s culinary team works with you to create a menu that suits your event’s style and guests’ preferences. Options abound, from elegant plated multi-course dinners to bountiful buffets or trendy appetizer stations. You can choose from our carefully crafted banquet menu or request your favorite seasonal dishes – our goal is to deliver a dining experience that earns rave reviews from your guests.

Do you have specific holiday treats in mind? Just let us know! Perhaps a dessert table with Christmas cookies and hot cocoa, or a cocktail hour featuring local craft beer and a signature holiday punch. Our Executive Chef and catering team love infusing menus with seasonal flair. And rest assured, we accommodate dietary needs or special requests – vegetarian, gluten-free, kid-friendly options – so everyone leaves satisfied. Each menu is fully customizable, and we’ll help you pair courses with the perfect wines or festive beverages for a complete gourmet experience.

And here’s something hosts especially appreciate: our kitchen’s advanced preparation technology ensures that every dish comes out fresh and hot right on schedule, even if there are unexpected delays in your program. That means if speeches run long or Santa’s arrival is a bit late, the food quality won’t suffer. It’s all part of our commitment to a smooth, stress-free event.

Off-Site Catering – We Bring the Feast to You

Already have a venue in mind, like your office or community hall, but still want to enjoy the Superior Inn’s famous food and service? No problem – we offer off-site catering that brings our gourmet experience to your location. If you can’t come to the Superior Inn, we’ll come to you with delicious fare and professional service.

Our off-site catering menu is as impressive and diverse as what we serve in-house. Craving something unique for your holiday party? From traditional roast turkey dinners to barbecue spreads or live cooking stations, our off-site catering team is equipped with everything needed to wow your guests. No kitchen on-site? We bring the necessary equipment along, so you don’t have to worry about a thing. Our team handles setup, service, and cleanup, leaving you free to celebrate. Need advice on timing for speeches or activities? We’ve organized countless events and can offer a timeline that keeps the party flowing.

On the day of your event, our banquet managers and servers will take care of the heavy lifting. They’ll set up the room (so you don’t have to string the lights or place the centerpieces yourself), attend to guests during the event, and promptly handle any last-minute needs or changes. You can actually enjoy your own party – mix and mingle with your guests, knowing that behind the scenes our team has everything under control. We even have an in-house certified wedding consultant on the team, which means we’re adept at handling high-stakes, detail-intensive events with poise. That expertise translates to any gathering – be it a wedding, a holiday gala, or a year-end business conference.

And speaking of business: if your December plans include a company meeting or seminar, our conference amenities will keep your attendees comfortable and productive. We provide essentials like projectors, sound systems, flip charts, and of course reliable Wi-Fi. Need a break-out room for a private gift exchange or a quiet space for VIPs? With multiple meeting rooms, that’s easy to arrange. Just let us know what you need, and we’ll make it happen.

Throughout the holiday season, our staff also brings an extra dose of cheer and hospitality. As November arrives in Thunder Bay, the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp. With sunset around 5:30 PM and average daily highs only about 2°C (36°F) – dipping to lows near -4°C (25°F) – the city settles into a chilly late-autumn hush. Outdoor adventures become fleeting as fall fades, and travelers find themselves craving warmth and comfort. Luckily, the Superior Inn Hotel & Conference Centre offers a welcoming haven from November’s frosty embrace. Step inside our doors and you’re greeted by the glow of friendly smiles and a cozy lobby that instantly melts away the cold. In a month often defined by early nights and brisk weather, The Superior Inn wraps you in warmth and hospitality from the moment you arrive.

November in Thunder Bay is very much an indoor season – it’s often “too cold for summer things” yet “not enough snow for winter things,” meaning visitors naturally turn to indoor activities and relaxation. This is the time to embrace the comforts of home-away-from-home, and The Superior Inn is perfectly attuned to that need. Whether you’re a family planning a staycation, a couple seeking a cozy weekend escape, a business traveler wrapping up fall travel, or a local resident treating yourself to a little getaway, our hotel ensures that November is not a month to endure but a season to savor. Here’s how we make late autumn at The Superior Inn feel wonderfully inviting and memorable for every guest.

Cozy Rooms and Warm Welcomes

After a day out in the brisk air, nothing feels better than returning to a warm, cozy room. The Superior Inn boasts 182 guest rooms designed for comfort. Sink into plush pillow-top beds with fresh linens, and wake up to the aroma of complimentary in-room coffee brewing to start your morning right. Each room is a toasty retreat from November’s chill, but if you’re seeking an extra touch of luxury (perhaps for a romantic escape), consider one of our newly renovated Spa Suites. These premium suites feature king-size beds, inviting sitting areas, and even warm fireplaces for those crisp nights. Imagine curling up by your own fireplace with a good book or a loved one, as early winter winds whisper outside – pure bliss!

We know that cozy means different things to different travelers. For some, it’s the quiet comfort of a well-appointed room; for others, it might be the welcome sight of their four-legged companion after a long drive. Yes, The Superior Inn is proudly pet-friendly, so you don’t have to leave your furry family members behind. We even offer pet amenities to keep your pet just as content as you are during your stay. Our goal is to make every guest – including the canine kind – feel right at home. And speaking of homey touches, throughout the hotel you’ll notice warm details that reflect the season. Don’t be surprised to find a bit of autumn decor still adorning our lobby or the faint scent of spiced coffee in the air. It’s all part of creating that “home for the holidays” atmosphere as winter draws near.

Indoor Fun for the Whole Family

When blustery November weather keeps you indoors, The Superior Inn turns downtime into fun time. Our indoor pool complex is a year-round hit – and it truly shines in the colder months. Under our atrium roof, you’ll find a tropical oasis where it’s summer no matter the temperature outside. Kids sprint towards our three-story waterslide with delight (and who could blame them?). Every twist and turn of the slide brings echoing laughter that fills the air. Parents can watch the splashes from the deck or join in the fun – because you’re never too old for a little waterpark excitement! And if relaxation is more your style, you can ease into the whirlpool hot tub nearby. Let the warm, bubbling water soak away any chill in your bones and melt your stress away. While November winds might howl outside, in here it’s all about leisure and laughter by the pool.

Families in particular treasure these indoor amenities. After all, late fall can be a tricky time to entertain kids, but at The Superior Inn the weather never disrupts your plans. You can spend hours swimming, sliding, and soaking without ever leaving the hotel. And when it’s time to dry off, our convenient poolside guest rooms let you transition from splash time to downtime in a snap (imagine stepping from the pool right into the comfort of your room!). For an extra dash of adventure, check out our unique theme suites decked out in kid-friendly décor – a surefire way to turn a night at the hotel into a magical mini-vacation for the little ones.

Hearty Meals and Cozy Dining Experiences

All that indoor fun and relaxation can work up an appetite. Thankfully, you won’t need to brave the cold for a good meal – Lake & Spruce Restaurant, our on-site dining spot, has you covered. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Lake & Spruce offers a welcoming space where comfort food takes center stage. In November, our chefs infuse the menu with seasonal flair. They love incorporating autumn harvest ingredients into hearty dishes that warm you from the inside out. Picture yourself savoring a bowl of velvety butternut squash soup or enjoying a plate of locally sourced Lake Superior fish, perfectly pan-seared, on a chilly evening. Craving something classic? Our famous crispy chicken wings or a charbroiled steak might hit the spot – the kind of satisfying fare that makes you forget how cold it is outside.

The atmosphere at Lake & Spruce is as cozy and inclusive as the food is delicious. The dining room and lounge are adorned in a style that’s both modern and warm – you might even call it one of the coziest restaurants in Thunder Bay. Settle into a booth or pull up a chair by the window; you’ll feel at ease whether you’re in a suit after a day of meetings or in casual attire after a swim. Families appreciate the laid-back vibe (toddlers can happily munch mac ’n’ cheese while parents sip local craft beer or a glass of wine). And since the restaurant is just steps from your room, there’s no need to bundle up the kids or scrape ice off the car – a delicious meal is always conveniently within reach.

After dinner, consider popping into our Lake & Spruce Lounge for a nightcap or a hot drink. As November nights get colder, there’s something undeniably satisfying about wrapping your hands around a mug of hot chocolate or a specialty coffee laced with Bailey’s, all while you remain comfortably indoors. Big game on TV? Our lounge’s brand new 75-inch screens (added this fall) ensure you won’t miss a moment, making it a great spot to catch the hockey game or watch the snowfall through the window as you relax. From dawn to dusk, dining at The Superior Inn is designed to keep you warm, well-fed, and content throughout your stay.

Exploring Thunder Bay – Indoors and Out

Just because November is chilly doesn’t mean you can’t explore Thunder Bay – it just means you’ll balance your adventures with plenty of indoor cozy time. The Superior Inn’s convenient location (just off Arthur Street West) puts you close to many of the city’s attractions, and our team is always ready with suggestions to make the most of a late-fall visit. This time of year, we often recommend focusing on the unique indoor attractions and the beauty of the early winter landscape when weather permits.

  • Thunder Bay Art Gallery – Discover the vibrant arts scene of Northwestern Ontario. This gallery is actually the largest art gallery in Northern Ontario, specializing in contemporary Indigenous art. It’s a fantastic cultural escape on a cold afternoon. Wander through thought-provoking exhibits and enjoy the creative spirit of the region, all in the warm comfort of an indoor setting.
  • Thunder Bay Museum – Dive into local history at a museum that houses three floors of exhibits showcasing the rich heritage of Thunder Bay and the surrounding region. From Indigenous history and the fur trade era to more recent stories, the museum offers an educational and family-friendly way to spend a few hours indoors. It’s open afternoons throughout the winter season, making it an easy add-on to your day.
  • Coffee Shops & Boutiques – Embrace the simple pleasures of November by visiting one of Thunder Bay’s cozy coffee roasters or independent shops. Grab a pumpkin spice latte or a famous local Persian donut (a Thunder Bay specialty!) and stroll through the Waterfront District’s boutiques. The early dusk and chill in the air make the city’s cafés even more inviting – perfect for warming up between activities.

Of course, if you catch a mild day or a dusting of early snow, there are outdoor sights worth seeing. A brisk walk at Marina Park offers stunning views of Lake Superior’s November waves and the Sleeping Giant formation silhouetted against the gray sky. You might even find the city’s seasonal skating rink starting to form at the waterfront (weather dependent) or see holiday lights beginning to twinkle around town. And for those eager for winter sports, local ski hills like Loch Lomond aren’t open quite yet, but you can certainly start plotting a return trip once the snow falls in earnest! In the meantime, Thunder Bay’s late autumn beauty is best enjoyed in small doses – a quick hike to Kakabeka Falls to see the “Niagara of the North” in its off-season splendor, or a drive up to Mount McKay’s lookout for a panoramic view of the city before retreating someplace warm. Through it all, The Superior Inn serves as your cozy base camp – head out for adventure by day and know that a warm room (and maybe a hot tub soak) will be waiting for you when you return.

Superior Hospitality as the Holidays Near

As we transition from fall to winter, our team at The Superior Inn embraces the spirit of the season. You’ll notice it in the little touches – perhaps a festive decoration appearing in the lobby in late November, or our front desk staff ready with recommendations for the best local spots to grab a steaming hot chocolate. We pride ourselves on offering warm, personalized service year-round, and there’s something about November that brings out an extra level of care. It might be the anticipation of the holidays or the desire to make every guest feel like part of the family during a chilly season – whatever the reason, expect to be greeted with genuine warmth and hospitality at every turn.

Business travelers will find that even as the calendar winds down, we haven’t missed a beat. Our meeting rooms and conference facilities remain fully operational for any year-end seminars or planning sessions you might have. And if you’re flying in, the complimentary airport shuttle is still just a phone call away – no one wants to contend with scraping a rental car in November’s biting wind! We handle the logistics and comfort so you can focus on your work (or relaxation). Reliable free high-speed Wi-Fi, a well-equipped fitness center for maintaining your routine, and staff on standby to assist with any request – it’s all in place to ensure a smooth stay, no matter the purpose of your visit.

Above all, hospitality at The Superior Inn means flexibility and care. Need extra blankets or pillows to make your room even cozier? Just ask. Craving a midnight snack? Our 24-hour front desk can point you toward the vending area or let you know if our kitchen has any late-night options. We understand that in this quiet, introspective time of year, it’s the small comforts that leave a lasting impression. And we’re here to deliver those in spades, from the moment you check in to the moment we wish you safe travels.

Plan Your November Escape

As the winter holidays loom on the horizon, November in Thunder Bay offers a peaceful interlude – a chance to slow down and enjoy life’s simple pleasures before the December rush. It’s a time of crackling fireplaces, indoor explorations, and cozy evenings, and The Superior Inn Hotel & Conference Centre invites you to experience it all with us. We strive to make our November stays feel special. Perhaps it’s the way our team remembers your name and asks how your day went, or how the aroma of fresh coffee greets you each morning in the lobby. Maybe it’s just knowing that while the winds may howl outside, you’re snug and cared for within our walls.

If you’re planning a visit or a local staycation this November, now is a great time to secure your room. The city’s big summer crowds are long gone, and the ski season rush is still a few weeks away – meaning you can often enjoy a quieter, more intimate experience. Browse our website or give our friendly reservations team a call to find the perfect room or suite for your needs. And if you have any special requests (an adjoining room for family, or tips on where to celebrate a milestone during your stay), we’re here to help make it happen.

When you stay with us at The Superior Inn, late autumn in Thunder Bay transforms from a cold stretch of time into a season of warmth, relaxation, and connection. So bundle up and come on over – we’ll have the coffee hot, the beds made, and the welcome mat out. Whether you’re escaping for the weekend or settling in for a longer visit, we promise to make your November 2025 truly superior. We can’t wait to welcome you and share the cozy side of Thunder Bay this November!

October in Thunder Bay has its own rhythm — shorter days, cooler nights, and the kind of crisp air that makes you crave comfort food, good company, and a reason to gather. At the heart of this rhythm is Lake & Spruce Restaurant, inside the Superior Inn Hotel & Conference Centre, which has just introduced a Daily Specials Menu that is turning heads and setting the table for a whole new way of dining.

Forget the idea that “specials” are just side notes on a menu. At Lake & Spruce, the Daily Specials are the main attraction — a carefully curated lineup that brings flavor, fun, and affordability to every day of the week. For locals, it’s a fresh reason to step out on a Monday night. For travelers, it’s an invitation to experience Thunder Bay’s hospitality in the most delicious way possible.

The Daily Specials – Seven Days, Seven Cravings

Here’s the best part: each day of the week has its own personality, and the Daily Specials reflect it perfectly.

  • Sunday – $6 Pints: Sundays are meant for slowing down, and nothing pairs better with a laid-back evening than a smooth pint of beer, poured to perfection, at a price that makes you smile.
  • Monday – Appetizer Platter (Pick 3 for $30): Mondays are often heavy, but not at Lake & Spruce. Build your own flavor trio from jalapeño poppers, Thai chicken bites, mini perogies, spinach dip, potato poppers, or mozzarella sticks. It’s perfect for sharing with friends — or keeping all to yourself if the Monday blues call for comfort food therapy.
  • Tuesday – $2 Off Cocktails: Midweek calls for a toast. Whether you’re into classics like margaritas or prefer something bold and shaken, Tuesdays are for celebrating the everyday.
  • Wednesday – $5 Off Any Burger: By Wednesday, everyone needs a win. Here, it comes in the form of juicy burgers — whether you go with the iconic Lake & Spruce Burger or the hearty Steakhouse Burger, the flavors are bold, the portions are generous, and the price just right.
  • Thursday – $13 Wings Special: Thursdays belong to wings, and Lake & Spruce does them right. Saucy, crispy, messy-in-the-best-way wings in flavors like hot, honey garlic, teriyaki, or dry rub. A pound of flavor, a reason to gather, and the unofficial kickoff to the weekend.
  • Friday – $2 Off Beer-Battered Chicken Strips: Golden, crunchy, and served with house fries, this Friday classic is the kind of comfort food that makes you forget the week’s stress.
  • Saturday – $2 Off House Wine: Weekends are for celebrating, and whether it’s red, white, or rosé, the curated house wines offer a toast to connection and indulgence.

Each special is carefully thought out — an easy way to turn any day into an occasion. And that’s the genius of it: Lake & Spruce doesn’t just serve meals; it serves moments.

Beyond the Plate – The Experience

Of course, food is only half the story. What makes these specials so inviting is the atmosphere in which they’re enjoyed. Lake & Spruce has long been known for striking a balance between being a reliable hotel restaurant and a genuine local favourite. Its warm, relaxed vibe makes it equally fitting for families, coworkers, or groups of friends looking for a casual night out.

The Sports Bar & Lounge brings another layer to the experience. It’s the spot where laughter rises over clinking glasses, where the hum of conversation mingles with the excitement of game nights, and where late-night bites feel just as satisfying as dinner.

And now, there’s something brand new to elevate the vibe even further: 75-inch televisions have been installed in the restaurant and lounge. For sports fans, this changes everything. Imagine wings and pints with the game playing in cinematic detail right above you — suddenly, Lake & Spruce isn’t just dinner, it’s game night central.

Hours That Welcome Everyone

Part of what makes Lake & Spruce so accessible is its schedule. It’s open when you need it:

  • Restaurant: Daily from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
  • Lounge: Daily from 11:00 a.m. to midnight (11:00 p.m. on Sundays). A full menu is served until 10:00 p.m., followed by a bar menu that keeps the night alive until closing.

Whether you’re an early riser craving breakfast, a business traveler needing a reliable lunch spot, or a night owl looking for a casual hangout, Lake & Spruce meets you where you are.

Why the Daily Specials Are the Real Game-Changer

The Daily Specials aren’t just about price — they’re about rhythm and ritual. By anchoring each day with its own signature dish or drink, Lake & Spruce gives locals a reason to return again and again, while making guests feel like they’ve stumbled upon a little secret of Thunder Bay dining.

It’s clever in its simplicity: specials that are crave-worthy, portions that feel generous, and an atmosphere that encourages lingering. It’s not trying to be fussy or overcomplicated; it’s about comfort, connection, and the joy of knowing you’ll always find something new on the table.

Final Word – October Belongs to Lake & Spruce

As the leaves turn and the nights grow cooler, there’s no better time to gather around good food and good company. Lake & Spruce’s October Daily Specials Menu isn’t just a promotion — it’s an invitation to make the everyday special.

Whether it’s the sizzling aroma of wings on a Thursday night, the laughter over cocktails on a Tuesday, or the quiet satisfaction of a Saturday wine, Lake & Spruce has turned October into a month-long celebration of dining done right.

All of our 182 guest rooms are equipped for comfort: sink into plush pillow-top beds and fresh linens after a long day, and wake up to complimentary in-room coffee to start your morning right. Unwinding is easy with a modern rainhead shower room and serene ambiance designed for pure relaxation. In September, nights in Thunder Bay can be chilly, but you’ll stay toasty and relaxed in a suite that feels like a home away from home.

For travelers with pets, don’t worry – we haven’t forgotten your furry companions. The Superior Inn is proudly pet-friendly, so you can bring the whole family along on your autumn adventure. After all, what’s a fall road trip without your best four-legged friend by your side? We even offer pet amenity packages to keep your pet just as comfortable as you.

September at The Superior Inn promises cozy comfort – from newly renovated spa suites with fireplaces to warm hospitality that makes you feel at home. Our Thunder Bay hotel’s welcoming exterior invites travelers of all kinds to experience superior comfort this fall.

Fun and Relaxation for Families

September is a fantastic time for family travel – the summer crowds have thinned, but there’s still plenty to do in Thunder Bay. At The Superior Inn, we’ve got amenities that keep both kids and parents happy. Our indoor pool complex is a hit year-round, featuring a three-story waterslide that offers endless fun for kids (and the young at heart!). While the children splash away, parents can unwind in the whirlpool hot tub and let any travel stress melt off. It’s the perfect way to spend an afternoon if the weather turns drizzly or cool. And don’t forget to check out our unique theme suites – decorated with fun kid-friendly themes – which turn a simple hotel stay into an adventure for the little one.

When it’s time to refuel, you don’t even need to leave the hotel. Lake & Spruce Restaurant, our on-site dining spot, is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and serves a crowd-pleasing range of dishes. This September, look for seasonal flavors on the menu – our chefs love incorporating autumn harvest ingredients into hearty comfort foods. Imagine savoring warm butternut squash soup, locally sourced Lake Superior fish, or our famous crispy chicken wings on a cool evening. The casual, family-friendly atmosphere at Lake & Spruce means everyone is welcome – from toddlers craving mac ’n’ cheese to adults enjoying a perfectly grilled steak. Plus, parents will appreciate the convenience of not having to bundle the kids into the car for meals; a delicious dinner is just steps from your room.

For families visiting this fall, Superior Inn offers plenty of fun: an indoor pool with a towering waterslide keeps kids entertained while parents relax. It’s the perfect place to unwind after exploring Thunder Bay’s autumn attractions.

Outside the hotel, Thunder Bay offers family-friendly attractions that pair perfectly with the fall season. Take the kids for a day at Fort William Historical Park, a sprawling living history museum just a short drive from the hotel – in early fall the recreations of the 1800s fur trade era are especially enjoyable in the crisp air (and there are often special events or activities on weekends). Or head to nearby Kakabeka Falls, a half-hour drive away, to witness the “Niagara of the North” surrounded by stunning autumn foliage. Back in town, the Thunder Bay Country Market (open Saturdays) is a great outing for families – you can browse local produce, baking, and crafts; kids love the tasty treats and everyone will enjoy the lively community atmosphere of harvest time. And after a day of adventure, returning to a spacious family suite or poolside room at The Superior Inn will feel just like coming home.

Productivity and Convenience for Business Travelers

For many professionals, September marks the return of business travel, conferences, and corporate events after the summer lull. The Superior Inn is tailor-made for business travelers and conference groups, combining modern facilities with unparalleled convenience. Our Thunder Bay Convention Centre boasts 12 meeting rooms with various layouts, accommodating groups from as small as 8 to as large as 700 guests. This flexibility means we can host anything from intimate workshops to large-scale seminars or banquets. Planning a fall training session or corporate retreat? We have you covered with full catering services and audio-visual equipment to ensure your event runs smoothly.

Location is often a top priority for those on business, and The Superior Inn shines in this regard. We are located only about 2 km from Thunder Bay International Airport, which is roughly a 2-minute drive – incredibly handy for quick business trips. In fact, we offer complimentary airport shuttle service for our guests, making your arrival and departure hassle-free. No need to worry about taxis or car rentals after a late flight – a quick call and our shuttle will be there to pick you up, any time of day. Once you’re here, you’ll find ample free parking if you have your own vehicle, and we’re right off Arthur Street West which connects easily to major routes in the city.

Staying productive on the road is easy thanks to the hotel’s reliable free high-speed Wi-Fi throughout the property (so you can comfortably join that Zoom meeting or send off emails from your room). Our guest rooms include ergonomic workspaces, and if you need anything printed or copied, just stop by the front desk – we’re here to help. Between meetings, you can maintain your workout routine at our fully equipped Fitness Centre (open early and late to suit your schedule) or take a refreshing break in the pool. And when the workday is done, Lake & Spruce Restaurant is the perfect place to invite a colleague for dinner or to unwind solo with a hearty meal and glass of wine, without the need to drive anywhere.

Lastly, if you’re visiting one of Thunder Bay’s educational institutions or corporate hubs, you’ll appreciate our central location. We’re within a 10-minute drive of major spots like Confederation College and the Thunder Bay Hospital/Research Centre, as well as being not far from the downtown core. By choosing The Superior Inn, you minimize your transit time and maximize your productivity – you can focus on your business, while we take care of your comfort.

Explore Thunder Bay: Events and Attractions in September

One of the best parts about visiting Thunder Bay in September is the diverse lineup of events and the natural beauty on display. There truly is something for everyone – and The Superior Inn positions you close to all the action. Here are some September highlights in Thunder Bay to look forward to:

  • Wake the Giant Music Festival (Sept 6): This dynamic outdoor festival celebrates inclusivity and Indigenous culture on Thunder Bay’s waterfront. Wake the Giant returns on the first weekend of September, bringing live bands, an Indigenous craft market, and delicious local foods to the Marina Park stage. It’s a world-class event with a powerful message, and after a day of dancing and celebrating at the festival, you’ll be back relaxing in your Superior Inn room within 10 minutes of leaving the park – we’re that close!
  • ThunderCon – Pop Culture Convention (Sept 20–21): Calling all fans of sci-fi, fantasy, comics, and gaming! ThunderCon 2025 hits the Canadian Lakehead Exhibition (CLE) grounds in late September for two days of geeky fun. Meet celebrity guests, marvel at creative cosplay, enjoy panel discussions and gaming tournaments – it’s a family-friendly celebration of fandom in the heart of Thunder Bay’s fall season. The Superior Inn is only a short drive from the CLE, making it easy to shuttle the whole family to this exciting event and back. Afterward, young superheroes and weary wizards alike can recharge in our comfy beds (and maybe splash down the waterslide to cap off the day!).
  • Live Concerts and Performances: The entertainment calendar in Thunder Bay stays lively in September. The Thunder Bay Community Auditorium kicks off its fall schedule with something for every taste – rock legend Geoff Tate (former lead singer of Queensrÿche) is set to perform on Sept 9, a highly acclaimed Eagles tribute show lands on Sept 17, and even the famous daredevil comedian Steve-O brings his “Crash and Burn” tour to the stage on Sept 18tbca.com. Whether you’re into classic rock, nostalgia acts, or edgy comedy, you’ll find a night out to enjoy. And if you prefer classical music or theatre, keep an eye on local listings – groups like the Consortium Aurora Borealis often host chamber music concerts, and venues like Magnus Theatre may have early fall performances. After an evening show, you’ll appreciate the quick trip back to the hotel to unwind – perhaps with a late snack at Lake & Spruce or a relaxing soak in the hot tub.
  • Outdoor Adventures and Fall Foliage: September is a gorgeous time for outdoor enthusiasts in Northwestern Ontario. The forests around Thunder Bay start turning brilliant shades of gold, red, and orange later in the month, offering breathtaking scenery. Hikers and nature lovers can take a day trip to Sleeping Giant Provincial Park (about an hour’s drive from the hotel) to trek the trails and witness panoramic views of Lake Superior framed by autumn colors. Closer by, drive up to the Mount McKay Scenic Lookout or the Terry Fox Memorial lookout – both spots provide stunning vistas over the city and lake, especially at sunrise or sunset. If you’re into biking, the cool weather is perfect for cycling the many trails around town, or even mountain biking at Shuniah Mines. And for a more relaxed outing, consider a visit to a local farm or orchard: places like Belluz Farms offer pumpkin patches and hayrides as fall approaches, and you can pick up fresh autumn produce to enjoy. No matter your adventure, The Superior Inn is your cozy base camp – you can head out for the day’s exploration and know that a clean, comfortable room (and maybe a whirlpool soak) awaits your return.

Savor the Season with Superior Inn Hospitality

From the moment you arrive at The Superior Inn in September, you’ll notice the little things we do to make your stay special. Our friendly front-desk team is always ready with local tips – whether it’s recommending the best spot for a pumpkin spice latte in town or giving directions to a scenic fall driving route. We take pride in treating every guest like family, and in autumn that means you can expect a warm smile and perhaps even some festive fall décor in our lobby.

A stay with us in September combines all the comforts of home with upscale amenities you’d expect from a top hotel. You can start your morning with a workout in our gym or a refreshing swim, then enjoy a hot breakfast at Lake & Spruce to fuel your day. Use the convenient in-room workspace to catch up on emails or plan your itinerary with the help of our free Wi-Fi. If you need anything – extra pillows, a quick laundry service, or a recommendation for a kid-friendly activity – just ask. Our goal is to make sure every traveler, from transient road trippers to conference attendees to vacationing families, feels catered to and cared for during their stay.

As the leaves change color and the fall festivities begin, consider making The Superior Inn your September home-away-from-home. Not only will you be perfectly situated to enjoy Thunder Bay’s events and natural beauty, but you’ll also have the assurance of returning each day to a place of comfort, quality, and superior service.

Summer Send‑Off with Drone Light Shows – Aug 27 & 28. To close the series, the city hosts a two‑night festival at Marina Park from 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm with extended planning. Each night includes three live bands, a food‑truck market, artisans and family activities. The headliners on Aug 27 are Boom Town, Throwback and Amanda Keeles, and Aug 28 features Cassidy Houston, singer‑songwriter Katherine Nemec and pop duo the Lockyer Boys. A 400‑drone light show produced in partnership with Thunder Bay International Airports Authority illuminates the waterfront after 9:30 pm. Admission is free.

Stay advantage at Superior Inn

Marina Park is less than a 10‑minute drive from the Superior Inn. After dancing under the stars or gazing at the drone light show, guests can retreat to comfortable rooms equipped with high‑speed Wi‑Fi and plush bedding. Our hotel’s free parking and late‑evening restaurant hours mean you can enjoy the concerts without worrying about where to park or where to grab a bite afterwards.

Free music every Monday: Waverley Park Concert Series

If you love intimate outdoor concerts, the Waverley Park Concert Series brings folk, jazz and acoustic acts to one of Thunder Bay’s oldest parks. The series, organized by the Coalition for Waverley Park and the Thunder Bay Musicians’ Association, runs from July 7 to Aug 25 with free performances every Monday from 6:30 pm to 9 pm. August highlights include:

  • Aug 4: Irish Echoes (6:30 pm) followed by Scotch and Water playing jazz‑folk blends.
  • Aug 11: Soloist Brother John and guitarist Jamie Philp.
  • Aug 18: Acoustic duo Jim‑n’‑I and pop‑folk performers Tammy Wilson & Adam Sabaz.

The Superior Inn is roughly 5 km from Waverley Park. Guests can enjoy a leisurely meal in our on‑site restaurant before heading to the park; afterwards, relax in the hot tub or take a stroll on the indoor jogging track.

Heritage fairs and cultural festivals

Canadian Lakehead Exhibition (CLE) Family Fair – Aug 6‑10

Thunder Bay’s largest summer celebration returns to the CLE grounds for five days of midway rides and local entertainment. Open from noon to 11 pm daily, the Family Fair offers carnival games, rides, karaoke, cooking demonstrations, a petting zoo, bingo and live music performances. Indoor exhibits highlight local crafts and produce, while the Kids World area provides hands‑on activities for children. The exhibition grounds are just a short drive down Arthur Street from our hotel, making the Superior Inn a convenient base for families attending the fair.

Festa Italiana – Aug 3 & 4

Thunder Bay’s Italian community hosts this two‑day cultural festival at the Italian Cultural Centre on Algoma Street. Festa Italiana, held on the Sunday and Monday of the August long weekend, transforms the centre’s parking lot into a festival area with an entertainment stage, food booths and a beer garden. Admission is free, and the festival showcases traditional Italian music and dance alongside home‑cooked favorites like bruschetta, gnocchi, lasagna and ravioli. Fireworks conclude each evening around 11 pm. Our hotel’s central location allows you to enjoy the festivities and return quickly for a restful night.

Arts, theatre and intimate concerts

Magnus Theatre Outdoor Stage

Thunder Bay’s professional theatre offers unique performances in August:

  • The Muppet Script (Aug 14–15). As part of the Unseen, Unheard and Uncurated series, this live staged reading pays tribute to the 1979 film The Muppet Movie. Adapted by Matt Wilkie and curated by Ryleigh Dupuis and Amy Sellors, the show brings Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie and Gonzo to life with live actors. The event runs approximately two hours and offers general‑admission seating at $40.
  • Katherine Nemec: Live from the Living Room (Aug 22). Singer‑songwriter Katherine Nemec performs songs that span her life—from childhood living‑room jam sessions to new originals—backed by a full band. The intimate outdoor concert begins at 7:30 pm; tickets are $40 with general admission.
  • Lies and Legends: The Musical Stories of Harry Chapin (July 17 – Aug 2). Running through the first weekend of August, this musical collection celebrates Harry Chapin’s storytelling songs, reminding audiences of the extraordinary stories within ordinary lives.

Magnus Theatre is about a 10‑minute drive from our hotel, making it easy to enjoy world‑class theatre and return to your room afterwards.

Tumblestone Music & Art Festival – Aug 22–23

A 20‑minute drive north of Thunder Bay in Gorham, Tumblestone Music & Art Festival offers a two‑day, two‑stage event highlighting independent and under‑represented musicians. The festival prides itself on featuring more local artists than other regional festivals, providing opportunities for new‑generation acts. Acts scheduled for 2025 include Hunt & Gather, Thirsty Monks, Pintail, Femur, VHS, Teknosis and many others. Weekend passes are available, and camping is encouraged; tenting is free, while RVs require a small camping pass donation.

AmberJam featuring Five Alarm Funk – Aug 29

This year the local AmberJam music festival moves to the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium. On Friday, Aug 29 at 4 pm the event opens with a performer on the lobby/patio stage before funk‑fusion powerhouse Five Alarm Funk takes the main stage. The festival, founded in 2017 as a beachfront event at Amberlite Wilderness Resort, celebrates Thunder Bay’s musical talent and returns to host its first indoor edition. The auditorium is a short drive from the Superior Inn, and our free parking makes it easy to head to the show.

Folk festivals beyond city limits

Live from the Rock Folk Festival – Aug 8–10 (Red Rock)

For those willing to venture 90 km east to Red Rock, the Live from the Rock Folk Festival offers a weekend of world‑class folk music on the shores of Lake Superior. Started in 2003, the volunteer‑run festival attracts more than 2,000 attendees and operates almost entirely on volunteer support. Daytime workshop‑style stages allow musicians to talk about their music and collaborate on the fly, creating one‑of‑a‑kind jam sessions. Evening concerts on the main stage round out the experience, and attendees can camp nearby. After spending the day in Red Rock, return to the Superior Inn for a comfortable sleep before your next adventure.

Rocking the Rez and other community concerts

If you arrive early in August, drop by Crossroad Music’s Summer Series on Aug 2. The free all‑ages event at Crossroad Music (632 City Rd.) runs 2 pm–8 pm and showcases various local acts each week. Our hotel is located a few minutes’ drive from the venue.

Our own event: The Commoners – Summer in the Parking Lot (Aug 28)

On Thursday, Aug 28 the Superior Inn hosts the 4th Annual Summer in the Parking Lot concert series. From 6 pm to 10 pm the parking lot becomes a stage featuring The Commoners, HeadRush and The Tom Cashmore Band. The event is all‑ages and offers free parking. The Commoners are touring behind their 2024 album Restless and have earned rave reviews for their blend of southern‑rock swagger and organ‑driven grooves. As the host hotel, we’re thrilled to bring live music right to your doorstep outside, enjoy great tunes and then head back inside to unwind.

It starts with a warm breeze and the quiet hum of anticipation. The sun hangs low over Arthur Street, casting golden light across the city. Somewhere nearby, a guitar is being tuned. A voice clears. A foot taps. And then, as if the whole city has taken a breath together, the first chord strikes—and Thunder Bay begins to sing.

Welcome to Summer in the Parking Lot, a soul-stirring concert series hosted by the heart of the city’s hospitality: Superior Inn Hotel & Conference Centre. This is not just a hotel event. This is a story in motion. A gathering of strangers who will become friends. A lineup of local legends who will become lifelong memories. A summer you’ll never forget, held in the hands of a place that never stops giving.

The Hotel That Became a Stage

Most hotels welcome you with a smile and a keycard. The Superior Inn welcomes you with a beat.

Nestled at 555 W. Arthur Street, this newly reimagined hotel has done something truly unexpected. Its parking lot, once a quiet space for cars and passing footsteps, has transformed into the city’s newest, boldest open-air music venue. Every Thursday night this summer, that same space turns into a sanctuary of sound. The lights go up. The amps crackle. And the magic begins.

It’s the kind of place where your hotel check-in might be followed by a spontaneous dance under the stars. Where the bartender at Lake & Spruce knows what cocktail pairs best with live blues or indie rock. Where the front desk team tells you which band is playing like they’re sharing a family secret. Because that’s what Superior Inn is. A family. A rhythm. A place where your room comes with a soundtrack.

Every Thursday Tells a New Story

From June 19 to August 28, every Thursday evening paints a new picture of Thunder Bay’s incredible musical talent. The lineups are nothing short of legendary. Names like THROWBACK, Radar and the Rockets, SoundBox, Wilson and Shabaz, and many more bring genres ranging from classic rock to alternative, from country to pure head-banging power.

There are also two special event nights that stand taller than the rest. On July 17, Kelly Daniels, Blood Red Moon, and The Lazys light up the night with thunderous energy. And on August 28, the final show of the season brings a festival-worthy conclusion featuring Tom Cashmore Band, Headrush, and The Commoners. These nights are bigger, bolder, and louder. Tickets are just twenty dollars, or one special punch on your concert card.

And it’s not just the music that matters. It’s the experience. Imagine sipping your favorite drink while kids dance near the front row. Imagine meeting people from across Canada who came not for the hotel, but for what it has become. A beacon of sound. A sanctuary for local music. A landmark reborn.

Stay for the Night, Stay for the Soul

If you’ve never experienced a concert from the comfort of your hotel doorstep, now is your chance.

Each Thursday, Superior Inn Hotel & Conference Centre opens its arms not just to guests, but to the city itself. Whether you’re checking in from out of town or walking over from around the corner, you’re stepping into a space where the hospitality is warm, the vibes are high, and the music is unforgettable.

The hotel features modern, comfortable rooms, ample free parking, pet-friendly accommodations, and one of the coziest restaurants in Thunder Bay. Lake & Spruce, located right inside the hotel, is more than just a place to eat. It’s the perfect pre-show hangout, serving meals that warm the stomach and the soul.

And when the concert is over, you’re just steps away from your pillow. No traffic. No taxis. Just music still echoing in your heart as you drift into sleep.

More Than a Show. It’s a Movement.

Summer in the Parking Lot is not just an event. It’s a statement. It’s about bringing music to the people, where they are. It’s about making the hotel more than just a resting place. It’s about turning Thursdays into traditions and strangers into choirs.

With support from NORCAT and the Superior Multicultural Music Development Society, this concert series is powered by passion, built on community, and driven by a belief that great things happen when people come together with purpose.

So whether you’re in Thunder Bay for a night, a weekend, or the entire season, let Superior Inn Hotel & Conference Centre be your home for the summer. A home where every Thursday, the city comes alive with the rhythm of live music, laughter, and connection.

This summer, the best seat in the house might just be in the parking lot.

If you’ve driven past The Superior Inn Hotel lately, you might’ve noticed something different. The familiar sign that once said Chicago Joe’s has been replaced by a new name—Lake & Spruce Restaurant. And with that change, we've heard the question floating through Thunder Bay: “Is the restaurant still open?

The answer is a heartfelt and resounding yes. We’re not just open, we’re thriving.

This June, we want to set the record straight and open our doors to old friends and new faces alike. Because while the name above the door has changed, everything else you loved remains just the way you remember it—and maybe even a little better.

A New Name, But the Same Soul

Lake & Spruce isn’t a brand-new restaurant. It’s a continuation of everything our guests have always loved—rooted in warmth, comfort, and unmistakable flavor. What began as a simple name change due to new ownership has unexpectedly led to a wave of confusion. Many of our regulars—those who’ve shared laughter, late-night snacks, and Sunday brunches under our roof—are now assuming we’ve closed our doors for good.

We haven’t. We’ve never been more excited to welcome you back.

Our kitchen still hums with the same culinary passion. Our legendary chicken wings and golden strips haven’t gone anywhere. The chefs who perfected your favorite dishes are still behind the grill, crafting every plate with care. The servers who remembered your usual orders, your birthdays, and your stories are still here, smiling, waiting to greet you.

Familiar Faces, Fresh Flavors

While our soul remains unchanged, we’ve taken this opportunity to refresh and expand our menu, bringing in seasonal ingredients, bold new flavors, and chef-inspired creations that pair beautifully with our timeless classics.

Expect more variety. More color on your plate. More inspiration drawn from the rich natural beauty of Thunder Bay—the lakes, the forests, the spirit of community. The name Lake & Spruce pays tribute to that landscape and to the roots we’ve planted right here at The Superior Inn.

Whether you’re a hotel guest looking for a satisfying dinner, a local craving your favorite wings, or someone simply curious to see what’s new, we promise this: your experience will feel familiar—and maybe even more delicious than before.

The Invitation Stands

This month, we invite you to rediscover the restaurant you thought you’d lost. Bring your family, your friends, your appetite, and your stories. Let the comforting smell of grilled chicken, fresh herbs, and seasoned fries lead you through our doors.

Because Lake & Spruce is more than just a name, it’s a promise that some things don’t need to change to stay special. We’re still your neighborhood gathering spot. We’re still the place where memories are made of good food and good company.

We’ve only just begun this new chapter. And we can’t wait for you to be a part of it.

On Saturday, May 3rd, 2025, the Superior Inn Hotel & Conference Centre will be alive with the sounds, sparkle, and spirit of the 1970s as we proudly host the final installment of the Roy Coran Big Band’s 2024/2025 Concert Series:

“Boogie! Songs of the 70’s”

If you remember the days of disco balls and cassette tapes — or if you've only heard about them from your parents — this concert will be a true blast from the past. Picture this: the bold horns of Earth, Wind & Fire, the infectious grooves of ABBA and The Bee Gees, the soulful melodies of Elton John and Donna Summer… all brought to life on one electric stage.

This high-energy, feel-good event isn’t just for music lovers — it’s for anyone who loves community, nostalgia, and a great night out.

Featuring Special Guests:

Joining the Roy Coran Big Band for this one-night-only performance are two beloved Thunder Bay talents: Nancy Freeborn and Spencer Hari. Their powerful vocals and magnetic stage presence will transport you straight to the golden era of big hair, bell bottoms, and platform shoes.

From disco anthems like “I Will Survive” and “The Hustle” to the funky, horn-filled hits of Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire, this show promises a dance-worthy trip through the greatest hits of the 70s — all performed live by Northern Ontario’s only professional big band.

It’s not just a concert. It’s a time-traveling musical experience.

A Throwback to the Good Old Days

Remember when MAS*H and Happy Days ruled the TV? When PONG was the only video game in town? This concert will stir up memories of those simpler, yet wildly fun days. Whether you're reliving your youth or discovering this golden decade for the first time, you’ll be swept away by the rhythm, color, and joy of the era.
